ELIZABETH, DAUGHTER OF WILLIAM BYKEBURY AND JOAN HIS WIFE

Majority claimed by Robert Burton her husband. William Bykebury held lands and tenements in his demesne as of fee and by curtesy after the death of Joan his wife of the inheritance of Elizabeth, by knight service of Thomas, earl of Devon , a minor in the king’s wardship.

Holdings

Robert Hille , aged 42 years and more, separately examined on Elizabeth’s age, says that she was aged 15 years and more on 23 April last and was born at Bigbury and baptised in the church of St Lawrence there on 23 April 1417. Asked how he knows, he says that Joan who was his wife died that day, and 15 years have since passed. The other jurors, separately examined, agree and say they know for the following reasons, all referring to events that happened on that day, 15 years ago. Andrew Hille , 40 years and more, had a son named Richard born. John Prideaux , 41 years and more, had a building consumed by fire. Richard Fortescu , 43 years and more, acquired a tenement in Modbury to himself and his heirs from John atte Dale , by John’s deed dated on 23 April 1417. Nicholas Coterell , 45 years and more, rode towards Bigbury to speak with the same William Bykebury and fell from his horse and broke his right shin. James Bancomb , 60 years and more, paid Henry Fortescu £20 which he owed through a bond and thereby had a quittance dated on 23 April 1417. John Pruteston , 46 years and more, married Florence his wife. William Mown , 40 years and more, wrote the day of Elizabeth’s birth in his missal at Puslinch. William Langham , 60 years, married his daughter named Margery to John Chope . John Weryng , 42 years and more, rendered an account before Henry Drewe and John Shilston , auditors of John Hille of Spaxton, at Exeter, and was found to be in arrears by £20, for which they committed him to Exeter gaol. Geoffrey Coke , 60 years and more, was at Bigbury, saw Elizabeth baptised in St Lawrence’s church and afterwards he and many others drank good wine. Richard Huchon , 43 years and more, had a ship sink in Bigbury Bay.
