On 27 September A.D.1400, William Bageley , father of Thomas, was seised in demesne as of fee of the following.
Midhurst, 2 messuages in the borough, called ‘Brewerestonement’ and ‘Iwenhalle’. The messuages, one worth 20s. yearly and the other worth 3s. 4d. yearly, are held of John de Bown, knight , service unknown
Chichester, a shop in the city, worth 8s. yearly, held of the dean and chapter of the cathedral church of Chichester by suit of court held every three weeks.
Midhurst is an ancient borough, and Chichester is an ancient city, and all tenements there have been devisable by will from time immemorial according to their customs. William bequeathed the two messuages and shop, among other things on that day, to Thomas his son, and to the heirs of his body, with remainder to Michael son of William, and his heirs and assigns in perpetuity. William afterwards died seised of the messuages and shop. Thomas entered them by virtue of the bequest and was thus seised in demesne as of fee tail. He continued his possession and took the issues until 10 March last, on which day he was convicted of heresies and lollardies and, for that reason, sentenced to death and burnt. He died without heir of his body and the messuages and shop should remain to Michael Bageley , still living.
