RALPH SON OF JOHN BOWLIERS, ESQUIRE , AND JOAN

Regarding his inheritance as son of John and Joan. John held lands and tenements of ‪ Henry V in chief by curtesy after the death of Joan from the inheritance of Ralph. They are now in the king’s hands.

Inquisition Head

GLOUCESTERSHIRE AND THE ADJACENT MARCH OF WALES. Proof of age. Gloucester 13 November 1429. [ Gilbert ].

Thomas Wardwyk , 56 and more, swears that he was born at Penhow in the March of Wales, baptised in the church there, and was aged 21 and more on 1 November last. Thomas had a daughter called Alice born on the day of the baptism. Richard Kemell , 48 and more, was in the church during the baptism and held a lit torch throughout the ceremony. John Venne , 50 and more, says that such a powerful wind blew up that the people of the vill feared the ruin of their houses. John Phelpes , 49 and more, was in service to John Bowliers , now deceased, and carried a basin with an ewer and a towel to the church so that the godfathers and godmothers could wash their hands after the baptism. John Wynyard , 60 and more, says that a stable suddenly caught fire at Penhow and two of his horses were burnt. John Andrewe, mercer , 51 and more, buried Richard his son. John Sewyn , 60 and more, married Alice, still his wife, and this was celebrated at Llanfihangel Rogiet. Thomas Purlewent , 48 and more, met many men coming from the church after the baptism. They told him that Ralph was baptised which gave him great joy. Walter Richemon , 54 and more, says that Margaret his wife died on the day of the baptism. Richard Underhull , 63, says that Joan his daughter was born. Walter Rede , 54 and more, was elected constable in the vill of Chepstow in the March of Wales. John Rede , 63 and more, saw Ralph ap Maddok , godfather, gave a silver cup with a cover to Ralph and 6s. 8d. to Ralph’s nurse so that she would take good care of him.
