John father of John died seised of the following in demesne as of fee.
Harpsfield, one hide, held of John, present abbot of St Albans , in right of his church, by fealty and finding a horse to carry a valet to Tynemouth whenever the abbot wishes to go there. The hide consists of 300 a. land, each acre worth 2d. yearly; and 12 a. waste wood, worth nothing yearly.
Harpsfield, 43 a. land called ‘le Brachez’, worth nothing yearly above service due to the lord of that fee, held of the same abbot by fealty and 13s. 4d. payable at Easter and Michaelmas by equal parts.
William, the late abbot and most recent predecessor of the present abbot, was seised of these services in demesne as of fee and in right of his church. They were delivered by John Harpisfeld , father, as his true tenant. During the reign of ‪ Henry III , Roger the abbot was seised of all the same services, and these were delivered by John son of Roger Harpisfeld . After the death of John, the lands descended to his son and heir, John. John was seised in his demesne as of fee and died seised of this estate but, because of his idiocy, the lands had come to the hands of ‪ Henry IV and are still in the hands of the king.
He died on 4 August last without heir. The lands should escheat to the abbot.
