Inquisition Head

YORKSHIRE. Proof of age. Ripley 18 June 1429. [Fitzwilliam].

William Tempest, chevalier , 54 and more, swears that William Ingilby was aged 21 on 8 June last. Asked how he knows, he says that Thomas Ingilby , father of William, invited him to stand as godfather to William the day after the birth. Although he wished to be a godfather, he refused because such a spiritual relationship could, in future, be an impediment to marriage. He thus recalls that 21 years have passed since William’s birth, and is certain that he is of full age. Roger Ward, chevalier , 46 and more, accepted the order of knighthood on the day of the birth. William Bekwith , 50 and more, was in Knaresborough forest the day after the birth, and killed a great stag. He sent it to Thomas and Eleanor, parents of William Ingilby . Robert Pensax , 60 and more, started his pilgrimage to St James on the day of the birth. John Pullayn , 60 and more, says that he was deputy to Peter Bukton, knight , then keeper of Knaresborough forest. Peter gave him two deer and a silver goblet to deliver to William Ingilby on the day of the baptism. John Birnand , 50 and more, says that Alice his wife waited with Eleanor, mother of William, around the time of William’s birth. Alice died four days after the birth. Henry Chambre , 54 and more, says that Robert his son made his profession as a monk at Fountains Abbey on the 1 January before the birth. Richard Thorp , 66 and more, says that the translation of St William is celebrated on 8 June in the province of York and, on the day of William Ingilby ’s birth, a miracle took place after prayers and divine service in honour of St William . One of Richard’s boys called Wilfrid was exhausted by fever to the point of death, but he was saved by St William on that day. Richard de Wode , 50 and more, carried a silver basin before William Ingilby in the church of Ripley, and was at the baptism. William Fencotys , 60 and more, married Katherine on the Sunday following the birth of William Ingilby . John Darnebrukes , 53 and more, was riding to Ripley to attend the baptism when his horse stumbled on the bridge over the Nidd. Both John and the horse fell, and were almost drowned. Robert Atkynson , 61 and more, put his first-born son Henry in school at Ripon on 12 March before the birth, and he stayed there for three years until he went to Oxford.
