CITY OF LONDON. Proof of age. Guildhall. 26 July 1426. [Coventre]

The jurors say that Elizabeth was born in the city in the house of William Staundon , her father, in the parish of St Michael Paternoster Royal in the ward of Dowgate, London, on 21 January 1405 and baptised in the church of St Michael Paternoster Royal, and was aged 21 years on 2 February last. They have the following recollections. John Reyner , aged [?40] and 6 years [ms torn], says Geoffrey Brook , citizen and grocer of London, was godfather and he baptized Elizabeth in the church. William Okebourne , 44 years, says that Alice wife of Thomas Ruxston was Elizabeth’s wet-nurse and carried her from the church to her father’s townhouse. John Warde , 50 years, says that his wife was pregnant and was delivered of two boys the day that Elizabeth was baptised. Thomas Milbourne , 48 years, saw William Bateman, servant to Elizabeth’s father, carrying warm water to the font in the church at the time of Elizabeth’s baptism. William Monde , 60 years, says that Elizabeth late wife of William More , late citizen and vintner of London, acted as godparent and named her. Geoffrey Postwell , 47 years, says that Alice wife of Richard Plasterer was Elizabeth’s first wet-nurse. John Killyk , 49 years, brought Alice wife of Thomas Polle Aur to the church to act as Elizabeth’s godparent together with the same Geoffrey Brook and Elizabeth wife of William More . Laurence Blyton , 53 years, says that his wife was servant in the house of Elizabeth’s father and carried a silver basin and ewer to the church at the time of Elizabeth’s baptism. John Richard , 42 years, says that Maud wife of Stephen Lalleford , brewer, went to [the collegiate church] of St Martin le Grand, London to confirm the baptism and raised Elizabeth from the bishop’s hands. Thomas Ovynton , 49 years, says that the wife of John Reyner was weakened from the birth of Richard, son of John Reyner , the day that Elizabeth was born. John Trillow , 54 years, says that the rector of the church was elected master of the hospital of St Thomas the martyr in Southwark just after Elizabeth’s birth. William Botom , 58 years, says that John Styward was parish clerk and held the Bible for the priest baptising Elizabeth.
