JOHN SON AND HEIR OF IVES DE HARLESTON

527 Writ de etate probanda. ‡ 18 February 1425. [Smyth]

William Fyndern to be informed. He has custody of 2/3 of the late Ives de Harleston ’s manor of Dunton called ‘Chamburleynsbury’ in Bedfordshire, by demise of John Foliaumbe and John Pygot, junior , to whom ‪Henry IV had committed custody by letters patent [CPR 1401–5, p.367], and custody of 1/3 manor by demise of Margaret Rokell to whom ‪Henry IV had similarly committed custody by letters patent.

The jurors say that John was born at Wimbish and baptised in the vill’s church, and was aged 21 years on 1 November last. They recollect his age for the following reasons. John Skymmyng , aged 50 years and more, was present in the church at the time of the baptism and saw John Ha[?y]ton , godfather, give John 20s. immediately after he was baptised. Roger Conestable , 54 years and more, says that the same day that John was baptised there was such a strong wind in Wimbish that various men feared the destruction of their weaker houses. William Higham , 60 years and more, says that Robert, his son, died on the day that John was baptised, after a long illness. Simon Pepir , 56 years and more, married Isabel the same day that John was baptised. John Howlot , 59 years and more, carried a basin and ewer before John, the son, when he was carried to church for baptism. John Riche , 52 years and more, says that Joan his wife gave birth to a son named Robert the same day that John was baptised. Henry Skynner , 49 years and more, says that various of his houses in the vill were burnt in a substantial fire. John Sherwynd , ‘barbour’, 46 years and more, sent for Margaret Raynewall to be John’s wet-nurse immediately after John was baptised. Richard Lange , 55 years and more, was then parish clerk of this church and held the Bible before the priest while John was baptised. William Vyne , 51 years and more, says that Robert, his son, celebrated his first mass after... the same day that John was baptised. John Gale , 56 years and more, climbing on a... his right shin was broken the same day that John was baptised. John Yonge , 47 years and more, was then servant to Ives, father of John, and held a torch before John when he was baptised.
