Holdings

John son of John son of William Argentein, chevalier , who held of ‪Henry V‬ in chief, died a minor in ‪Henry V‬ ’s wardship. [The writ states he died a minor in ‪Henry VI’s wardship.] He died seised in his demesne as of fee of the following.

Great Wymondley, the manor, held of the king in chief by service of the grand serjeanty of serving the king with the first silver gilt cup at his coronation. In the manor there are a toft called ‘Casteley’, worth 12d. yearly; 300 a. arable, each acre worth 2d. yearly; 14 a. meadow, each acre worth 12d. yearly; 12 a. pasture, each acre worth 6d. yearly; 6 a. wood, each acre worth 4d. yearly; a water-mill, worth 3s. yearly; and 24s. assize rents at Christmas, Easter, Midsummer and Michaelmas in equal portions.
Little Wymondley, the manor, held of the king of the honour of Aumale by service of 6s. 8d. for watch and ward at the castle of Craven [sc. Skipton]. In the manor within the site there are a hall with chambers... [uncertain] annexed to other buildings of the manor, worth nothing yearly; 400 a. arable, each acre worth 2d. yearly; 20 a. meadow, each acre worth 12d. yearly; 60 a. pasture, each acre worth 6d. yearly; 30 a. wood, each acre worth 4d. yearly; and £6 6s. 8d. assize rents at the same feasts as above.
Weston, the manor called ‘Argenteines maner’, held of John Grey, chevalier , and Custancia his wife of the manor of Weston, service unknown. In the manor there are a toft, worth 10s. yearly; 100 a. arable, each acre worth 2d. yearly; 6 a. pasture, each acre worth 6d. yearly; and 30s. 4d. assize rents at the above feasts.

He died on 21 July 1420. Elizabeth Argentein and Joan Argentein are his sisters and next heirs, Elizabeth aged 13 years and more and Joan 12 years and more.

Owing to the death of William Argentein, knight , who held of ‪Henry V‬ , and the minority of John son of John son of William, in ‪Henry V‬’s wardship,

40s. annual rent at Michaelmas, Christmas, Easter and Midsummer in equal portions, belonging to the manor of Ashendon, came into ‪Henry V‬’s possession. Margery widow of William holds 13s. 4d. of this rent in dower, reversion to Elizabeth and Joan, sisters and heirs of John son of John. The 40s. rent is part of the manor of Little Wymondley in Hertfordshire, held of the king of the honour of Skipton (Cravene) by service of 10s.

Date of death as in 282.

John Hotoft , Thomas Aleyn and John Fray took all issues except for the dower, from the time of William Argentein ’s death until the day of this inquisition and still do so, title unknown.

Elizabeth Argentein and Joan Argentein are his sisters and next heirs, Elizabeth was aged 13 years on 12 May last and Joan 11 years on 24 June last.
