JOHN CHEDYOK SON AND HEIR OF JOHN CHEDYOK, CHEVALIER

The jurors say that John was born at Chideock and baptised at the church there and was 21 years on 1 November last. This they know well for the following reasons. William Payn of Catherston Leweston, aged 54 years, says that John was baptised by William Burton, chaplain , and he was present. Baldewin Thornhull, 50, says that Ralph Bret, esquire , who was John’s godfather, often told him that John was this age. Walter Lillyngton , 60, was staying at the time of John’s birth with Ives Fitzwareyn, chevalier , John’s grandfather, and heard report of the birth communicated to Ives at Stourton Caundle by a servant of John Chediok the father. John Milborn , 44, gives the dedication of the church as St Giles. He was staying at the time of John’s birth with John, now abbot of Abbotsbury then ?Benedictine steward of the abbey, the other godfather, when a servant of John Chediok the father brought John, now abbot, report of the birth. William Keggeworth , 46, says that at the time of the baptism there was a great peal of thunder and a little boy in the church lost his senses because of its violence. William Offeley , 48, says that immediately after the baptism there was a flash of such bright lightning that a young girl playing in the road lost her eyesight. William Quyntyn , 54, says that the day of the birth Thomas Shawe , son of Henry Shawe and Alice his wife, John’s godmother, was bound to serve William as a live-in apprentice. William Pernam of Bridport, 47, carried a basin and ewer full of water to church to wash the hands of the godfathers and godmother. John Proute , 48, met many men and women coming from the church who told him that John was baptised and made a Christian. William Marchell , 50, after the baptism provided the godfathers and godmother with water to wash their hands. John Crosse , 51, carried two silver pots full of wine to the church on the day of the birth, to give to the godfathers and godmother after the baptism. Robert Godewyn , 43, on the day of the birth saw John, now abbot of Abbotsbury, godfather, give the godmother 6s. 8d. within the church door.
