JOHN SON AND HEIR OF CONSTANTINE DE CLYFTON

673 Writ for proof of age ‡ 4 Nov. 1416. [Smyth].

He claims to have been born and baptized at Old Buckenham in Norfolk, and by grant of Richard II the lands and tenements which Constantine de Clyfton held of Richard II in chief were granted during his minority to Simon Felbrigge, knight, who should be warned.

William Breggeham , 60, says that John is aged 21 years and more and was born at Old Buckenham and baptized in the church of All Saints there on 30 March 1394. He knows because he was in the church and received the manor of Hargham at farm from the prioress of Bruisyard for a 7-year term. Alexander Payn , 51, was in the church and purchased 1 a. arable in Buckenham from Thomas Herberd for 5 marks. John Neel , 44, married Margaret daughter of Alan Hengham in the church on that day. Thomas Petecok , 58, as reeve announced the next court for Buckenham manor on that day in the church. Richard Cogell , 47, was in the church and saw Robert son of the same Richard Neel [sic] baptized immediately after John. John Parker , 49, says that his father John was buried on the same day. Richard Weke , 57, says that his daughter Katharine married John Boteler of Attleborough in the church on the same day. Roger Nobbys , 56, attended John Parker 's burial in the church on that day. William Lodekyn , 53, was in the church and John Tyler of Buckenham sold him a messuage called `Godalys' in Buckenham. John Wryghte , 66, was in the church and took at farm a manor called `Lathes' from Constantine de Clyfton for a 12-year term. Edmund Beffoo , 63, was in the church when his son Robert, chaplain , celebrated his first mass on that day. Thomas Aleyn , 48, was in the church while all the chaplains and clerks sang a solemn Te Deum. I, Thomas Hethe, escheator, certify that that I warned Simon Felbrigge, knight, named in the writ, to be at Attleborough on 4 Nov. for the proof by Simon Kickowe, Peter Payn, Thomas Herberd and John Bernard, but he did not appear.
