671 Writ for proof of age ‡ 3 Nov. 1416. [Wymbyssh].

He claims to have been born and baptized at Gnosall in Staffordshire. Also kinsman and heir of Ellen, the other sister of Thomas Cherlton of Apley, who died a minor in the ward of Henry IV, he is by grant from John Knyghtley, to whom the lands and tenements which Thomas Cherlton his uncle held of Richard II in chief were granted during his minority by letters patent from Henry IV [cf. CPR 1399-1401, p. 331], the ward of Richard Knyghtley, who should be warned.

Richard Nowell , 60, says that Thomas Charlton is aged 21 years and more and was born at Gnosall and baptized in the church there on 30 March 1394. He knows because he was in the church and received at farm for a 20-year term a pasture called `Pantonfeld' from the prior of Ranton . Thomas Banastre , 51, was in the church and bought 1 a. arable in Gnosall from Thomas Harberd for 5 marks. William Huston , 50, married Agnes daughter of Gilbert Bret in the church on the same day. Henry Spenser , 60, as reeve announced in the church on that day the next court to be held for John Knyghtley 's manor of Cowley. John Croft , 51, says that he saw Robert son of Richard Lele baptized in the church after Thomas. William atte Yate , 48, says his father John was buried on that day. John Carter , 67, says that his daughter Katharine married John Botiller of Knightley in the church on that day. William Cooke , 56, was in the church when John Weur was buried on that day. William Lea , 53, says that his daughter Katharine married John Tyrell on that day. Geoffrey Colet , 60, was in the church on that day and received a windmill at Cowley at farm from John Knyghtley for a 12-year term. Geoffrey Harper , 63, was in the church on that day when Robert de Coton, chaplain , celebrated his first mass. James Morton , 60, was in the church when William More married Katharine Sprot immediately after Thomas's baptism. I, John Knyghtley, escheator, certify that that I warned John Knyghtley, named in the writ, to be at Gnosall on 20 Dec. for the proof by Richard Banastr’, John [at]te Grene, Robert Colet and John Reignold, but he did not appear.
