Richard Pyperell of Painsford and John Mayour were seised in demesne as of fee of the manor of Black Torrington by feoffment of Amaury Fitzwaryn , deceased, and by their indenture dated at Black Torrington on 18 June 1420 and shown to the jurors in evidence granted it to Richard Pyperell and his wife Joan, deceased, as Richard Pyperell of Hollacombe and his wife Joan, daughter and heir of Amaury Fitzwaryn , and the heirs of their bodies, remainder to the right heirs of Amaury. Joan died without issue by Richard, and Richard afterwards died without issue by Joan, and the manor remained to William Danylles , aged 30 years and more, son of Amaury's sister Isabel. The manor is held by knight service of the heir of John de Sancto Mauro , esquire, a minor in the king's wardship. There are in the manor 40 a. arable, annual value 40s., 8 a. meadow, annual value 8s., 80 a. wood, the pasture of which is worth 6s. 8d. yearly, and £8 assize rents paid yearly by various tenants at will at Easter, the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, Michaelmas and Christmas in equal portions. East. 1410-11 [CP 25/1/45/74, no. 125] between John Fortescu , Richard Piperell junior , Andrew Blakhall and Richard Baucombe , quer., and Richard Piperell senior and his wife Alice and Philip Boterford and his wife Thomas (Thomasia), def., the def. acknowledged the manors of Gidcott, Manworthy and Clannaborough and 19 messuages, 2 carucates, 28 a. meadow, 100 a. furze, 100 a. heath, 33s. 1d. rent and a rent of 6 lb. wax in Whitebear, Tinacre, Alwington, `Towykstrete', Manworthy Mill, `Blakedonhalledon' and Harbertonford, and the advowson of the chantry at Trewyn to be the right of John Fortescu as those which quer. had of the gift of def., for which quer. granted and rendered in court to Richard Piperell senior and Alice the manor of Gidcott except 3 a. wood called `Twyfeldyes', 10 messuages, a carucate, 12 a. meadow, 30 a. furze, 30 a. heath and 10s. 6d. rent in Whitebear, Cowick Barton, >Tinacre, Manworthy Mill and Alwington, a moiety of the manor of Manworthy and the first two turns and then alternate right of presentation to the chantry, to hold to them and the heirs of their bodies of the chief lord of the fee for the services due, with the following remainders, to the heirs of body of Alice, to Philip and Thomas and the heirs of their bodies, the heirs of the body of Thomas, and the right heirs of Alice. The quer. granted and rendered to Philip and Thomas and the heirs of their bodies the manor of Clannaborough, 9 messuages, a carucate, 16 a. meadow, 70 a. furze, 70 a. heath and 22s. 7d. rent and a rent of 6 lb. pepper in Blagdon, Hawkdown and Harbertonford, a moiety of the manor of Manworthy, except 3 a. wood as above, and the advowson as specified above, to hold to Philip and Thomas and the heirs of their bodies of the chief lord of the fee for the services due, with the following remainders, to the heirs of Thomas's body, to Richard Piperell senior and Alice and the heirs of their bodies, to the heirs of Alice's body, to the right heirs of Thomas. By virtue of the fine Richard Piperell senior and Alice were seised and had issue Richard Piperell named in the writ. Richard senior and Alice afterwards died and the manor, moiety and advowson descended to Richard as their son and heir. Richard named in the writ died without issue and the manor reverted to Thomas, aged 40 years, now the wife of Thomas Norys , and formerly of Philip Boterford , deceased, because Alice died without issue. The manor of Gidcott, 6 messuages, 6 a. meadow and 20 a. furze in Whitebear are held by knight service of Philip Courtenay, esquire , a minor in the king's wardship. There are in the manor 6 messuages, annual value nil, 6 a. meadow, annual value 3s. 4d., 20 a. furze, annual value 20d., 200 a. arable leased to various tenants at will, paying £4 at Easter, the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, Michaelmas and Christmas in equal portions. Annual value of the messuages in Whitebear 20s. The rest of the messuages, lands and tenements are held separately of the abbot of Torre of his manor of Holsworthy, the prior of Cowick , William Ferrers and John Speke and his wife Joan, service unknown. Richard named in the writ also died seised in fee tail, i.e. to him and the heirs of his body, by grant of Richard de Holecombe son of Richard de Holecombe , Richard Piperell and his wife Alice, deceased, father and mother of Richard named in the writ, of 6 messuages and 200 a. arable in Hollacombe, Keaton, Wonwell, Plympton and Wringworthy with common of pasture on the demesne land of Ermington and with the common estovers called housbote and hay-bote in Yarninknowle which Florence Piperell held for life and which after her death ought to have reverted to Richard Holecombe , but which remained to Richard Pyperell the father and his wife Alice and the heirs of Richard's body as appears by a charter dated at Hollacombe on 9 June 1388 by which Florence attorned to Richard the father. Florence afterwards died and Richard and Alice entered and were seised in fee tail. They died and the lands descended to Richard named in the writ as the son and heir of their bodies. Richard the son died without heir of his body and the lands reverted to Alice wife of Thomas Wyndesore , daughter and next heir of Richard Holecombe . The lands are held of Thomas Stonore, esquire , of his manor of Ermington, service unknown, annual value £4. Richard named in the writ was also seised in his demesne as of fee of 8 messuages, 2 mills, a dovecot, ?80 a. arable, ?25 a. meadow, 22 a. wood, 200 a. waste and £9 4s. rent in Meadwell, Westlake, Worthele, Holbeton, Winston, Sheepham, Bridge Town, Plympton, 'Juliscombe', '?Olanhes..h..pr., Brownston and Creacombe, held of William Botreaux, knight , Thomas Arundell, knight , Thomas Stonore, esquire , and John Legh , service unknown, annual value 100s.
