Holdings

John Carbonell, esquire , was seised in his demesne as of fee of the manor of Burston by a charter shown to the jurors and dated 7 Sept. 1408, the king's licence having been obtained [7 Nov. 1407: CPR 1405-8, p. 374], by which the manor was granted to Roger Swyllyngton, knight , in tail male, remainder to his right heirs. Roger held the manor by virtue of the grant and died, after whose death the manor descended to his son and heir John Swyllyngton, knight , except 1/3 which Joan widow of Roger held and still holds in dower by assignment of Roger and John. After John's death the manor, except the 1/3, descended according to the form of the gift to Robert Swyllyngton named in the writ as brother and heir of John and Robert died seised of the manor except the 1/3 and 1/3 of 2/3 which Joan widow of John held and still holds in dower by assignment of John and Robert. With those exceptions, the manor remained after Robert's death to Margaret wife of John Graa, knight , as daughter and heir of Roger because Robert died without male issue.

Burston. Over and above the dower portions there are in the manor part of a capital messuage, annual value nil, 100 a. arable worth 2 1/2d. an acre, total 20s. 10d., 16 a. meadow worth 10d., 1/4d. and half 1/4d., total 13s. 10d., and 54s. 2 3/4d. at Christmas, Easter, the Nativity of St. John the Baptist and Michaelmas. The entire manor of is held of the king in chief by service of 1 knight's fee, annual value over and above the dower portions £4 8s. 10 3/4d.

William de Leke , Thomas de Derby and Thomas de Assheby of Quenby were formerly seised in their demesne as of fee of the manor of Kirby Bellars, 18 messuages, 7 tofts, 2 shops, 25 virgates, 40 a. meadow and £10 rent in Leicester, Somerby, Goadby, Eastwell, Holwell, Ab Kettleby, Melton Mowbray, Thrussington, Grimston, Thorpe Satchville, Little Dalby and Framland hundred in Leicestershire and by a charter shown to the jurors dated 8 Sept. 1396 demised the manor and its appurtenances to John de Eyllesford and his wife Margaret and Margaret's heirs. John died and after Margaret's death Robert Swillyngton, knight , named in the writ, entered as her kinsman and heir, i.e. son of Roger de Swillyngton, knight , son of Margaret, and was seised in his demesne as of fee tail according to the form of the gift.

The manor of Kirby Bellars is held of the master of Burton Lazars by service of 7s. yearly, annual value £16 7s. There are in the manor a hall, 14 chambers, a malt-kiln, a `malthous', 3 stables, a building called `le feehous', a piggery, 3 barns, a granary, a dovecot, and 2 gardens, annual value nil. There are also 4 carucates worth 10s. each, 40 a. meadow worth 18d. an acre, 2 crofts, 3 closes of several pasture, annual value 53s. 4d., a plot with a croft adjoining called `Newegore', annual value 20s. and held of the prior of Monks Kirby , service unknown, £4 rent from free tenants, i.e. 10s. at Martinmas, 16s. at the Purification, 28s. at Easter, 8s. at Whitsun, 12s. at St. James and 6s. at Michaelmas, 74s. rent from bond tenants and cottagers, and perquisites of courtwith view of frankpledge, annual value 6s. 8d.: annual total of the foregoing £16 14s.

There are in Holwell 2 a. arable, annual value 4d., and a rood of meadow, annual value 4d., both held of the prior of Kirby Bellars , service unknown.
There are in Ab Kettleby a croft, held of the heirs of John Tatyssale , service unknown, annual value 4d.
There are in Melton Mowbray
a messuage, 2 tofts and 4 virgates, held of the prior of Lewes , service unknown, annual value 24s. paid at the above-mentioned terms in equal portions; there are also
14s. 6d. assize rents of free tenants at Martinmas, Easter and Michaelmas in equal portions; there are also
a barn, annual value 3s., held of Lord Mowbray by fealty and suit of court at Melton Mowbray twice a year and by service of 2s. yearly
.
There is a yearly rent of 10 marks from tenements formerly held by Henry Notyngham in Thrussington paid at St. Andrew , Easter and Michaelmas in equal portions and held of the heir of Walter Wappunbury , service unknown.
There are in Grimston a messuage and a carucate, annual value 10s., held of the heir of John Segrave , service unknown.
There is in Thorpe Satchville a messuage, annual value 2s., 4 virgates, annual value nil because they lie fallow, and 10s. rent from 2 bond tenants at the Purification, the Ascension and Michaelmas in equal portions, with a rent of 5 hens at Christmas, annual value of each hen 1d., total 5d., all held of the lord of Oakham , service unknown.
There are in Little Dalby a messuage, annual value nil, and 9s. assize rents from free tenants, held of the prior of Kirby [?Bellars] , service unknown.
Annual value of perquisites of the hundred of Framland 40s. There are the following rents in the hundred: £4 called `palfraysylver' at Easter and Michaelmas; £7 2s. 10 1/2d. called `shirryftothe' at the same terms; and 29s. 5d. called `palfraysilver' at Michaelmas.
