JOHN SON OF JOHN FITZWILLIAM, KNIGHT

147 Writ for proof of age. ‡ 27 Aug. 1418. [Smyth]. Teste John, duke of Bedford.

He claims to have been born and baptized at Sprotborough in Yorkshire. His lands are in the custody of Thomas Clarell and Richard Winteworth, who should be warned [CFR 1413–22, p. 244]. Endorsed: they were warned to appear at Conisborough on 16 Sep. 1418, by John Ga[m]ull, Richard Cok, John Br[o]un and Richard More, but did not come, in person or by attorney.

The jurors say that John was born at Sprotbrough on 15 Aug. 1397 and baptized in the church there on the same day, and they remember for the following reasons: Roger de Preston of Hickleton, aged 50 years, his son William set out for the Holy Land on that day. John Vavasour of Denaby, ?47 years, his uncle Thomas died on that day. John Ardern of Kirk Sandall, 43 years, his son Robert was nearly crushed that day by a cart laden with timber. Ralph de Ane of Frickley, 43 years, his mother Agnes had a son ?Thomas on that day. Thomas Seinpoul of Campsall, 48 years, his daughter Elizabeth was buried in the churchyard of Owston on that day. Edmund de Scauseby of Scausby, 43 years, his brother Richard married his wife Alice on that day in Mexborough church. Simon Cursoune of Hickleton, 45 years, his brother John was retained ? by Henry Percy, late earl of Northumberland, on that day. Thomas Repas of Loversall, 50 years, an ash tree fell on the belfry of Sprotbrough church on that day. William Hall of Harlington, 44 years, his mother Joan was churched of a daughter called Elizabeth on the same day. Robert Bosville of Conisbrough, 50 years, buried his daughter Isabel in Conisbrough church on that day. William Hoton of..., 49 years, his sister Margaret was married to John Wayte on that day. John Schepchank of Hardwick, 60 years, on that day his daughter Maud was baptized in Rotherham church.
