Holdings

He held in his demesne as of fee 1 messuage, 1 cottage, 2 crofts and 1 virgate in Plumpton, not mentioned in the former inquisition [CIPM XIX, no. 1015, quoted with writ], and concealed; of whom and by what service is unknown, annual value 32s.

William Harwedon has held and taken the profits and is answerable for them.

The inquisition and its writ have been copied onto three membranes, sewn together, on which are also copies of: [m. 1] CIPM XIX, no. 1015, writ and inquisition; Writ of 1 May 1413 committing the custody and marriage of Helen, daughter and heir of Thomas Dystere, late citizen and mercer of London, who held in chief, to Robert Morton, esquire, rendering the value to be agreed with the treasurer before Michaelmas then next following, by Edmund Fitzwilliam and Thomas Clarell of Yorkshire, mainpernors. [CFR 1413–22, p.17; and nos. 6723 above] Helen, sister and heir of Thomas, is now aged 13 years and more. Writ of 9 June 1413, as on 12 Jan. 1413 Henry IV committed the custody and marriage to Thomas Burton of London, and no agreement was made with him as to the payment of the treasurer, the same is now committed to Robert Morton, esquire, who has agreed with the treasurer [CPR 1413–16, pp.21–22].--> [m. 2] Protection for Robert Morton, going overseas, 9 May 1416. [Another protection for Robert Morton, esquire, is dated 1 July 1418.] [dorse of m. 2] Bill of privy seal for Robert Morton, esquire, for issue of letters of protection with clause volumus, 27 June 1419. [m. 3] Order to escheator to take the concealed holdings described in the inquisition into the king’s hands, 20 Oct. 1417, attested by John, duke of Bedford. Endorsed: executed by Thomas Wydevill, escheator. [dorse of m. 1] Inquisition at Northampton castle, before John ... and Thomas ... commissioners. 3 Mar. 1419. Jurors: Thomas Mauntell; William Mayhewe; William Hoore; Richard Campyon; William Merflete; Richard Challake; William Burneby; John Botiller of Coton; John Herward of ...; Robert Pyncard; Thomas Smyth of Ashton; Paul ?Bulgey; and Ralph Patte. Thomas Dyster son and heir of John Dyster died on 4 July 1403 seised in his demesne as of fee of a cottage, 2 crofts, and 20s. rent issuing from a messuage and virgate of land in Plumpton, with the reversion of the messuage and virgate after the deaths of Thomas Cherie and John Cherie who held for the term of their lives by grant of John father of Thomas [service and tenure not specified]. He held a messuage and a virgate of land in Farthinghoe of the king in chief by knight service. The cottage and crofts are worth 12s. yearly. The messuage and virgate in Farthinghoe are worth 13s. 4d. yearly. All the above were not taken into Henry IV’s hands but were concealed from him and from the present king. William Harwedon received the issues of the holdings in Plumpton from Michaelmas 1406 to the taking of this inquisition and still has them. It is not known who received them from Thomas’s death until that date, or who received the issues in Farthinghoe from his death until the taking of this inquisition. Ellen wife of John Hertwell, citizen and merchant of London, is his daughter and next heir, a minor in the king’s ward. Commission for the above inquisition to John Cokayn and others [CPR 1416–22, p.206], 11 Feb. 1419, attested by John, duke of Bedford [writ clerk: Haseley] Writ of non omittas to the sheriff of Northampton, to summon (scire facias) William Harwedon to appear before the barons of the Exchequer in the quindene of Hilary to answer for the above issues, 28 Nov. 1419. By originalia anno. 6 rot. 26, the above inquisition delivered to the Exchequer and in the custody of the remembrancer, and by the barons.
