Housham, the manor, of the king in chief by knight service, annual value £10 6s.8d. The abbot of Bermondsey holds the manor of Cowick in Sheering of the manor of Housham as 1 knight’s fee, rendering 100s. to the lord of Housham at each vacancy of the abbey.

Margaretting, half the manor, of the king in chief, service unknown, annual value £6. By letters patent he granted the other half to Richard Pavy, esquire , for the term of 60 years or the life of Richard if he died within the 60 years, and the earl warranted it to him. Later he quitclaimed it to Richard for life, with reversion to his own right heirs.

By his charter dated at East Dean on 16 Dec. 1405 he granted John Wele, esquire , the manor of Woolston in Chigwell, except for wards, marriages and reliefs, to hold for life rendering a rose at Midsummer. It is held of the king in chief by knight service, annual value £16.

He granted the manor called ‘Langetones’ in Little Canfield to John Someray for life with reversion to himself and his heirs. It is held of Joan countess of Hereford by knight service, annual value £8.

They held and had issue Thomas, Elizabeth, Joan and Margaret, as above.

Richard was seised and had 3 sons by Eleanor viz. Richard, John and Thomas. Eleanor died and Richard afterwards died seised. The castle etc. descended to Richard as son and heir male of Richard by Eleanor. He died seised and the castle etc. descended to Thomas late earl Arundel named in the commission, son and heir male of [Richard, illegitimate] son of Richard late earl. He died seised and the castle etc. descended to John de Arundell, chivaler, kin and next heir male of Thomas, as the son of John, the son of John, the son of Richard late earl by Eleanor, because Robert died without heir male of his body. The castle, vills, manors, hundred, return of writs, forests, and chases, are held of the king in chief by knight service, annual value 400 m.

[Licence CPR 1413–6, p.336]. They are held of the king in chief by knight service. He died holding the castle etc. of Arundel and the manors of East Dean etc. as in last, annual values and status unknown.

Long before his death Thomas granted by royal licence to Thomas lord Camoys and others [as above, no. 666] the castle and lordship of Reigate, and the manors of Betchworth and Dorking to hold to them and their heirs and assigns of the king in chief.

He also held in his demesne as of fee a 3rd part of the tolls and customs of the towns of Guildford and Southwark of the king in chief by knight service, annual value £4.

William Milton and Richard Shrovesbury , bailiffs of Guildford, have taken the profits from 14 October when he died until the present. They are held of James Botelere, earl of Ormond as 1 knight’s fee.

Robert Thresk, clerk , formerly held in his demesne as of fee 1 messuage, 230 a. arable, 36 a. wood and 12s. rent in West Burgh, Banstead, Ewell and Sandown of the king in chief, service unknown, annual value £4. By his deed dated 12 Feb. 1415 he enfeoffed Thomas, earl of Arundel and Surrey , John Fitzpiers, esquire , Richard Wakehurst and Nicholas Dixon , and their heirs and assigns in this messuage and lands without the king’s licence.

He held in demesne as of fee tail to him and the heirs male of his body, by a fine in the octave of Trinity, 1347, as above [no. 663], the manors of Knighton and Keevil and half the manor of Bulkington (the fine being to Richard earl of Arundel for life, with remainder to the heirs male of his body by Eleanor, daughter of Henry of Lancaster; then to Richard de Arundel, junior, and the heirs male of his body; and to the right heirs of the earl). An exemplification of the fine under the Great Seal was shown to the jurors. The said John de Kyuele attorned to earl Richard. The earl had issue by Eleanor viz: Joan, now countess of Hereford; Richard; Alice now countess of Kent; John; and Thomas, late archbishop of Canterbury. The earl died and the manors descended to Richard; he was seised and had issue Thomas the late earl, named in the writ. The manors descended to Thomas after Richard’s death; Thomas was seised and died without heir male of his body. The manor of Knighton ought to descend to John de Arundell, chivaler, kin and heir male of Thomas the late earl, viz. son of John son of John son of Richard the late earl and Eleanor. Long before his death Thomas, seised of the manor of Keevil and ½ manor of Bulkington, made a charter to Edward Charleton of Powys, chivaler, Robert Poblewe, and Thomas Harlyng, clerks, John Boerlee, David Holbache, and John Tauk [charter recited in full, dated at Arundel, 10 August 1407; no witnesses], granting them and their heirs and assigns the castle, vill and manor of Shrawardine in Shropshire, the manor of Keevil and ½ manor of Bulkington, royal licence of 25 July 1407 [recited in full] previously having been obtained. Thomas made a letter of attorney [recited in full, dated at Arundel 10 August 1407] to Robert Ingler and Richard Laken to deliver seisin. Edward and the others made a letter of attorney to Richard Mayn and William Poynour to receive seisin [recited in full, dated at Arundel 11 August 1407]. Robert delivered seisin to Richard and ?the tenants of the manors attorned to Edward and the others. Edward and the others were seised and by a simple charter (cartam simplicem) [recited in full; dated at Arundel 20 August 1407] granted the castle, manor and moiety to Thomas and Beatrice his wife for life with remainder to the right heirs of the earl. The earl and Beatrice were seised jointly by the form of the above charters and letters recited word for word and shown to the jurors, and received the issues. Beatrice survives. The jurors do not know whether or not her estate is sufficient at law and ?seek judgement of the king’s court. John Boerlee and John Tauk are dead. Edward, Robert, Thomas and David survive. The manor of Knighton is held of ?William ?Esturmy, knight, service unknown, annual value ?£10 yearly. The manor of Keevil and the moiety are held of the king in chief by knight service, worth ?£40 yearly.
