Ela wife of Richard, father of Richard, held in dower 1 messuage and 4 shops in Broad Street in Broad Street ward in the parish of St. Peter le Poor with reversion to Richard. By an indenture, dated at ‘Lovellesmersshe’ in Somerset on 10 Oct. 1401 and shown to the jurors, she granted all her rights in them to Richard on certain conditions. With them she granted 2 knight’s fees in Milton Clevedon by Bruton, formerly held by Thomas Lovell, 1 1/2 fees in Sparkford and Badgworth, held by John Lord Lovel and Holand, 1/2 fee in Discove held by Thomas Caremele and Joan Tottenesse, 1/4 fee in Foxcombe held by John Hugin, the rents and services of all these fees and also of Richard de la Mare , William Northlode and Richard Juwell for their holdings in Chilton Foliat and Westbury, and the rents and services of George Bithemore for 11 1/2 hides in ‘Alwardeston to hold for her life, but if Richard should die during her lifetime then all should revert to her for life. If in future she should stay in London then she should have the messuage at her pleasure, when not there Richard should have it. The witnesses to the indenture were William Sturton , John Mannyngford , John Fauntleroy , Robert Leddred , Thomas Barwe and others.

So Richard held the messuage and 4 shops in Broad Street of the king in free burgage, as all London is held, annual value 4 marks.

Castle Cary, the manor with the advowson of Ansford, except for all the lands in Pitcombe and Cole, formerly parcel of the manor, which Ela widow of Richard, his father, holds in dower, annual value of these lands £20. The manor and advowson are held to himself and his heirs under a fine of 1358 [CP 25(1)/287/45, no.541] by which John Derby , Walter de Polton and John de Westbury, chaplain , granted them to Nicholas de Sancto Mauro and Muriel his wife, the heirs of their bodies and the right heirs of Muriel. He was the son of Richard, son of Nicholas and Muriel. The annual value of the manor is £101 17s.10d., including £80 in rents of tenants payable by equal parts at the four terms.

Road, the manor and advowson, of Walter Rodeney, knight , by knight service, annual value £20, including £18 in rents payable by equal parts at Easter and Michaelmas.

Shepton Montague, 3 messuages, 1 curtilage, 360 a. and 1 virgate arable, and 8 a. meadow, of the heir of John late earl of Salisbury by fealty, annual value 50s.

Charlton Mackrell and Charlton Adam, 2 messuages, various curtilages and gardens, 203 a. arable, 8 a. meadow and 12 a. pasture, of Nicholas Poulet by a rent of 12d., annual value 55s.2d.

From Shepton Montague and the Charltons Richard de Sancto Mauro, senior , granted to Walter Silvayn , who is still living, a rent of 30s. for life, payable by equal parts at Easter and Michaelmas; and Richard the son granted to John Chevent a rent of 40s. for life, payable by equal parts at the four principal terms. The charters making these grants were shown to the jurors.

Jointly with Mary his wife, who survives him, he held 160 a. arable in Stoke Lane by the grant of William Loryng, canon of Salisbury , and Robert Leddred to them and their heirs with remainder to his right heirs. They are held of Maurice Russell, knight n559_001, by fealty, annual value 113s.4d.

Jointly with John Lovell and others he held 1 messuage with curtilage, 25 a. arable, and 4 a. meadow in Clanville by the grant of Walter Blancpayne , who had held them time out of mind, to them and their heirs, of Richard and his predecessors of his manor of Castle Cary by a rent of 5s., annual value 13s.4d.
