He formerly held in his demesne as of fee the manors of Gipswich, Campines and Champains in Cotton, of Thornham Magna called Hemenhall, of Wickham Skeith, and one called Boles in Yaxley.
In all of them he enfeoffed Robert Ashfelde , John Moriell, clerk , and others, and notwithstanding took all the issues and profits. The enfeoffment was made on condition that they enfeoffed William his son and heir when he reached full age, as clearly appears in Robert’s will; so by fraud and collusion excluding and barring the king from the wardship and marriage of his heir.
He died on 15 Sept. 1391. William his son and heir was then aged 4 years and more.
He died on 18 Dec. 1402. Ralph Hemenale is next heir, aged 40 years and more.
Robert Ashfelde , John Moriell, clerk , Hugh Lancastre, clerk , John Berton, clerk , and Simon Blyaunt took the profits from the death of Robert until the death of William to the use of William. Since then Hugh Lancastre, John Berton and Simon Blyaunt have received the profits, title unknown.

It is found in the rolls of account of Thomas Caus of Hocham, escheator, from 11 Nov. 1371 to 10 Dec. 1372, that he took the manor of Burnham into the king’s hand, late of Ralph de Hempnale, knight, by a writ of 16 Dec. 1371 from the Chancery of which there is a transcript delivered on the account, in which it is stated that Ralph held the manor of the king of the honour of Dover and alienated it to certain persons in fee without royal licence, and the manor is extended particulariter at £13 17d as is stated in an inquisition before the escheator similarly delivered on his account.
The inquisition referred to was not extant when OBS 1/299 (a nineteenth-century calendar of escheators' records) was compiled. It is not in CIMisc, though CIMisc III.756 concerns the same unlicensed alienation.
