John Gemys of Stagsden was seised in his demesne as of fee of 2/3 manor of Stagsden and the reversion of 1/3 manor which Robert Mordaunt and Joan his wife formerly held in her dower of John’s inheritance. By his charter dated at Stagsden, 5 May 1349, and shown to the jurors, he granted the 2/3 and remainder of the 1/3, to Roger de Milton and Robert de Suthewyk and their heirs. Robert and Joan attorned at Stagsden to Roger and Robert who were seised in their demesne as of fee. By their charter, produced for the jurors and dated 25 May 1349, Roger and Robert granted 1/2 of the 2/3, and the remainder of the 1/3, to John Gemys of Stagsden and Eleanor his wife for their lives. Robert and Joan attorned at Stagsden to John and Eleanor who were seised as of their free tenement. By a subsequent charter, dated at Stagsden on the same day and shown to the jurors, Roger and Robert granted the other 1/2 of 2/3 together with the 1/3, which should revert to Roger and Robert after the deaths of John Gemys and Eleanor, to John son of John Gemys , and Christine his wife and the heirs of their bodies, remainder to the right heirs of John Gemys , to hold of the king and his heirs by the services pertaining to the tenements. John Gemys and Eleanor attorned at Stagsden to John son of John and Christine who were seised in their demesne as of fee tail. John son of John died without heir and Christine died seised of the manor in this estate and no other.
William Gemys is the son and next heir of John Gemys, senior , aged 60 years and more.
The manor of Stagsden is held of the king by service of 1/3 knight’s fee. In the manor there are the site, worth 13s. 4d. yearly; 208 a. arable, each acre worth 2d. yearly; 4 a. meadow, each acre worth 20d. yearly; 2 a. pasture, each acre worth 12d. yearly; and 11s. 4d. rent from free tenants at Lady Day and Michaelmas in equal portions. The site, arable, meadow, pasture and rent make up the manor of Stagsden. The vill of ‘Stacheden’ and the vill of ‘Stachedene’ are one and the same and have been known and called by both names from time out of mind.
She died on 1 August last. Joan Bray and Joan Bosoun are her kinswomen and next heirs, Joan Bray being the daughter of Alice, one of Christine’s sisters, and Joan Bosoun the daughter of Emma, Christine’s other sister. [Ages not given.]
