John was 21 on 11 Sept. 1410 , having been born at Epping on 11 Sept. 1388 and baptised there. The jurors know this for the reasons given. Gilbert atte Chirche , aged 44 years, was in the church and held the book for the priest at the baptism. Walter Moor , 62, came to the church that day and brought a wax candle to burn before the image of the Virgin Mary at the time of the baptism. John Baltre, senior , 43, was in the church and made a footstool ( scabellum ) before the altar of the Virgin Mary at the time of the baptism. William Sloman , 47, that day carried sand ( zabulum ) in his cart to the church at the time of the baptism. Richard Sheryng , 60, was in the church. His wife Emma was godmother and he saw her holding John. Reynold Smyth , 44, was present in the church and placed a candle at the north door of the church at the time of the baptism. William Skynnere , 50, John Dawe , 52, John Sewat , 63, and William Dowble , 46, said separately that they were in the church and were asked by the father, Edmund, to bear witness to the age. On that day Gilbert atte Chirche granted by his deed to Richard Sheryng and Emma his wife and their heirs 1 a. in Epping. They were witnesses and the deed was read and shown to them. William Herry , 49, and John Wryghte , 47, on that day were asked to go to the church to witness the deed of Richard Sheryng , saw John in the graveyard after the baptism, and Edmund the father asked them to be witnesses. Margaret was warned and did not come.
